If you require any accessible accommodations for programs offered by Chiku Awali African Dance, Arts & Culture, Inc., please contact the Executive Director at info@chikuawali.org at least ten business days in advance of the required accommodation.
Dance and drumming instruction are accessible to people with disabilities. Please send an email to info@chikuawali to make an accessibility request.
For those with low vision, the dance instructor will help him/her by placing their body in the appropriate positions to perform the movements. In drumming, the instructor will help the patron play by placing his/her hands on the correct part of the drum.
For those who are hearing impaired, they will be able to visually see the movements of the instructors and imitate those movements. When needed, the instructor will use speech-to-text on a phone for patrons who are deaf so that he/she can read instructions, if required.
For those who are in wheelchairs, the focus will be on arm movements and how to manipulate the wheelchair during a dance. Special dances will be created to accommodate those who have disabilities.
For patrons with developmental disabilities, dance and drumming will be provided at a slower pace, if required.
